Saving Some $ on Coffee
Share
We all love stopping by the cafe for that perfect cup: the aroma, the vibe, the expertly crafted flavor. But what if you could have that same coffee shop quality every morning at home and save a serious chunk of change while doing it?
Good news: you can. And the math might surprise you.
The Real Cost Per Cup
Let’s take one of our 12oz bags of Soul Caffeine coffee. Each bag costs $17.99 and contains about 340 grams of freshly roasted beans.
When you brew coffee at home, a good starting point is a 16:1 water ratio, which means 16 parts water for every 1 part coffee. In practical terms, if you use 1 gram of coffee, you’ll brew it with 16 grams (or milliliters) of water.
Using that ratio, a full 12oz bag brews about 5.4 liters (1.4 gallons) of coffee. That’s roughly 31 cups of fresh-brewed coffee (using the classic 6oz “cup” measure).
Now let’s do the math:
$17.99 ÷ 31 ≈ $0.58 per cup
That’s about 58 cents per cup for the same coffee beans we use every day in our cafes.
Even if you brew a larger 8oz mug, it’s still only about 77 cents per mug. Compare that to $4 or more for a latte or drip at a coffee shop, and you can see how brewing at home adds up fast in a good way.
How to Brew Cafe-Quality Coffee at Home
The trick isn’t just the coffee itself (though that’s a big part of it). It’s the method and ratio. Here’s how to get started:
- Use fresh, quality beans — that’s where the flavor starts. (Hint: grab one of our single origins or blends from the Soul Caffeine Roastery.)
- Weigh your coffee and water using a kitchen scale for accuracy. For one cup, try 20g coffee with 320g water.
- Grind fresh with a burr grinder for the best consistency.
- Use good water preferably filtered.
- Mind your brew time. Too fast or too slow changes flavor. Aim for about 3–4 minutes for pour-over or drip.
Follow that 16:1 ratio and you’ll consistently brew coffee that rivals what you get from the cafe, only at a fraction of the cost.
